Donald Paul Houle, 76, passed peacefully with loving family nearby on December 24, 2024 at Baystate Noble Hospital in Westfield after a long illness. His life was characterized by a deep love of music and dedication to family and friends.
Donald was born January 20, 1948 in Northampton to Rose (Yagmin) and Donald Houle. After graduating from Easthampton High School and Holyoke Trade School, Donald enlisted in the US Marine Corps. He served active duty during the Vietnam War where he sustained injuries that led to his honorable discharge in 1968.
Donald, affectionately known as “Budda” by family, friends, and fellow musicians, achieved Shodan Black Belt 1st Degree from the US Judo Federation in 1989 and ranked First Dan by Kodokan Judo Institute in 1990. He played Lead Bass for Dogs of Rhythm Band and Baked Potato Machine Co. He will be remembered as a loving father, brother, uncle, friend and as a motorcycle riding, bass playing, free-spirited judoka.
Donald lived in Easthampton, Northampton, Greenfield, Charlemont, and finally Readsboro where he lived quietly with his loyal Rottweiler, Elroi. Donald was predeceased by his parents and sister, Sandy Houle. He leaves daughters Jerilyn Loria and husband Peter of Oradell and Heather Lawler of Barnard, and grandsons John Ewell and Griffin Suess. Brother, Gary Houle, who was dedicated to caring for him throughout his illness, and wife Ines of Holyoke. Nephew, Gary Houle Jr., wife Kristen of Coventry and their adult children Gavin Houle and Sarah Houle. Brother, Larry Houle of Southampton. Nephews, Jason Houle and Joseph Houle and their families.
All are invited to gather Thursday, January 9, 2025 for a graveside service at 11:00 AM with full Military Honors at St. Brigid's Cemetery, 91 Everett Street, Easthampton with repast following. Boucher - O'Brien Funeral Home is entrusted with his service.
